The story of Maison Rancé is one of enduring passion — a lineage of Master Perfumers who have spent over 230 years transforming the rarest essences of nature into timeless olfactory works of art. Born in the sun-drenched hills of Grasse and carried forward through seven extraordinary generations, Rancé's legacy represents the very pinnacle of French perfumery tradition.

Our Origins

It all began in Grasse, a sun-kissed hilltop town nestled along the French Riviera — the undisputed cradle of fine perfumery. There, Master Perfumer François Rancé founded his perfume laboratory, drawing on an extraordinary command of distillation and essence blending that had few rivals. His deep reverence for the surrounding flora fueled a creativity that produced groundbreaking fragrances, captivating an entire nation and announcing the birth of a legendary House.

Seven Generations of Master Perfumers

I
François Rancé
1731 – 1808

Born into a distinguished family of perfumed glove makers, François Rancé established his laboratory in Grasse in 1795. His precise distillation techniques and boundless creative vision produced fragrances so captivating that Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte himself became a devoted patron. François Charles personally created two of the House's most celebrated compositions — L'Impératrice and L'Eau Impériale — as tributes to the Emperor and Empress Joséphine. His original recipes, inscribed in centuries-old manuscripts, remain among the most treasured heirlooms of the Rancé family.

II
Jean Rancé
1771 – 1838

Jean Rancé carried his father's torch with distinction, making vital contributions to the expansion and reputation of the family business. A gifted perfumer in his own right, he continued the tradition of dedicating his finest works to Napoleon's dynasty. His most celebrated creations — Hélène and François Charles — were composed as personal tributes to two of the Emperor's children, immortalizing their names in fragrance.

III
François Alexandre Rancé
1815 – 1890

A visionary entrepreneur as much as a perfumer, François Alexandre fundamentally reshaped Maison Rancé's identity. Under his leadership, the House expanded boldly into pomades and body care products, captivating men and women across Europe with an entirely new category of luxury. His ambition and innovation were formally recognized at the prestigious 1855 Paris Exposition, where his achievements earned widespread acclaim.

IV
Alexandre Rancé
1872 – 1942

A decisive pivot-maker in the Rancé story, Alexandre chose to relocate the House from Grasse to Milan in 1902 — opening a vibrant new chapter steeped in Italian artistry. He devoted much of his energy to advancing the production of fine perfumed soaps, establishing the industrial foundations that would allow Rancé to scale its artisanal excellence across a wider audience without compromising quality.

V
Maurice Rancé
1907 – 1982

Under Maurice's passionate stewardship, Maison Rancé flourished into one of Italy's most celebrated beauty houses — a true emblem of prestige, elegance, and artisanal mastery. The 1930s saw an extraordinary proliferation of iconic products, from face powders and lipsticks to brilliantines and perfumed calendars, reflecting the House's creative confidence and its finger firmly on the pulse of the era's glamour.

VI
Jeanne-Sandra Rancé
1936 – 2018

A true pioneer of contemporary perfumery, Jeanne-Sandra Rancé steered the House with an audacious creative spirit. She championed gender-neutral colognes long before the concept became fashionable, formulating bold, boundary-defying fragrances and body products crafted from natural-origin ingredients. Her signature creations remain cornerstones of the Rancé collection, as distinctive and vital today as when they were first conceived.

VII
Giovanni Rancé
Present

Today, the Rancé story continues in the hands of Giovanni Rancé — CEO, Creative Director, and the seventh-generation custodian of the House's remarkable heritage. With a clear vision and unwavering commitment to excellence, Giovanni has spearheaded Rancé's international expansion, bringing the House's extraordinary legacy to over 50 markets worldwide, including the United States.
